Four last minute Licences
issued on the very last
days of 2010, detrimental
for the people of Corfu and
A few days before being replaced, the Regional Governor signed:
a) A licence for a gigantic Wind Farm Park on the mountain crest of Pantokrator.
b) A licence for a new High Power Electricity Relay Station at Gazatika, Korakiana
c) A licence for a huge Fishery, with a capacity of 250 tons annually,to be situated between Herimitis peninsula (San Stefano) and Kaparelli Island (Kassiopi).
d) A licence for a second huge Fishery, with a greater capacity of 300 tons annually, north-west of Kassiopi (Vathy bay).
1. The Pantocrator project is to extend through 1.800 acres of public forest land. The Wind Park will start from Michalakades peak above Spartillas and it will reach as far as the Monastery at the peak of Pantokrator, forming a 2 km long line of turbines visible from every part of the island and roaring over the heads of inhabitants and tourists in villages and luxury private villas in the neighbouring areas. Three of the windmills will be visible from Barbati village. The distance of the last wind turbine from Barbati will be only 1,100 meters. All of the 12 wind turbines will be visible from Spartilla village and the first one will be at a distance of only 560 meters from the first houses of the village.
Given that the noise of each turbine is equal of 104 decibel, a bit less than a Rock concert (120 decibel) no one will be able to continue to exist in the surrounding areas.
The Regional Governor accepted recent «Titles of Usucaption», legalising indirectly the territorial claims of private individuals to Greek state property, knowing that according to the Registry no. 19115/19115/13-10-2010 document of the Department of Forests (Ministry of Agriculture) this land (of 1800 acres) already constitutes the core of a wider public forest territory – Wild Life Refuge -- in a total area of 6.000 acres (ref: previously relative publications in «Corfu press» of Spiros Salvanos).
Given the present economic situation, wind farm parks will expand rapidly throughout Corfu from Diapontia Islands to Antipaxi, destroying the landscape. The first Aeolian production of gigantic poles and turbines will cover the whole mountain crest of Pantokrator, as two other projects have already been submitted for Approval and Concession: one on the summit of TSOUKA above Skripero and a second beyond the Monastery of Pantokrator to the North-east from VIGLA to Kassiopi.
2. After licencing of a new High Power Electricity Relay Station that will be added to the already existing one at Gazatika, the area of Korakiana is transformed to an electricity Station Park.
3. With regard to the two fisheries, disastrous implications will directly affect the sea ecosystem and accordingly the local inhabitants and tourist economy.
Just to get an idea, according to latest scientific research an annual production of 100 tons of fish produces raw sewage equal to a city of 7.900 inhabitants. Having in our case a projected total of 550 tons yearly, the sewage production would equal that of a city of 43.450 inhabitants.
It is clear from the above that the inhabitants of north east Corfu will soon be placed between two real disasters, besides the implications for the environment,: a) their health will be at risk b) their property will be devalued c) their businesses are going to be bankrupt and d) in general their life will be downgraded .
Therefore there is no alternative other than an immediate Appeal to the Supreme Administrative Court (ΣτΕ), before the expiration of legal time limits. This means that we should immediately collect the necessary financial means.
