Χαρακτηριστικά περιοχής
This wetland situated on the northern coast of the island of Kerkyra (Corfu) is important for the threatened species Lutra lutra as well as for the ecological balance in the area. In addition, the site is characterized by a variety of habitats, and human activities have not yet exerted much influence upon it. This is of great importance for an island like Kerkyra which shows great tourist development and great pressure due to building construction.

QUALITY
The wetland and the nearby habitats are kept in rather good condition. In the habitat class NO7 (Bogs, marshes, water fringed vegetation ) the reed thickets cover the extended areas (the majority of the cover percentage given). The protection and sustainable management of the site can contribute not only to the preservation of the wildlife but also to the economic development of the area (fishing, leisure activities, ecotourism). The greater the delays in establishing status of legal frame, the more the threats to the environment will increase. From the Other Important Species of Flora listed in section 3.3, the following taxa are included with motivation D, for the reasons mentioned below. Pancratium maritimum: A very attractive species which however in nowadays face the risk to extinct due to the different kind of human interference in its biotope (sandy beaches). Orchidaceae: Ophrys, and Orchis are attractive species with an interesting biology. The main interest of this site from a zoological point of view is focussed on the occurrence of the otter, Lutra lutra. Indeed, the local otter population although rather small, is among the two to three healthiest ones on Kerkyra island, and consequently needs particular attention. The two terrapin taxa of the site (Emys orbicularis and Mauremys caspica) are also important faunistic elements characteristic of the Mediterranean wetlands. These three animal taxa together with the colubrid snake Elaphe quatuorlineata and the fish Valencia hispanica and Aphanius fasciatus are listed in Annex II of the Directive 92/43/EEC (section 3.2). Besides these six Directive species, 10 non-bird vertebrate taxa recorded in this site are included in sections 3.3 and 3.4 as Other and Greek Important Species, respectively, all protected by the Bern Convention thus indicated by the C motivation. Apart from the frog Rana ridibunda and the marten Martes foina, these 10 taxa are also allocated the D motivation since they have fallen under one or two of the following three reasons: a) they are protected by the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981 (the only exceptions are the frog Rana epeirotica and the skink lizard Ablepharus kitaibelii), b) Rana epeirotica and the lizards Algyroides nigropunctatus and Podarcis taurica ionica are endemic to W or SW Balkans, and c) the frog Hyla arborea and the lizard Ablepharus kitaibelii are mentioned in the CORINE-Biotopes Project handbook. The biodiversity of this site is increasing because of the occurrence of an interesting avifauna including threatened waterfowl and birds of prey (e.g. Ardea purpurea and Circus aeruginosus). Generally speaking, this site seems to support a noteworthy lagoon fauna which, however, needs further study for clearer evaluation of its importance and for the selection of proper conservation and management measures in the area. The invertebrate species listed in section 3.3 with motivation C are protected by the Bern Convention. The invertebrate species listed in sections 3.3 and 3.4 with motivation D are protected by the Greek Presidential Decree 67/1981, except Everes argiades which is included in the list of "Threatened Rhopalocera (butterflies) of Europe. Anthocharis damone and Pieris krueperi are also included in this list. Additionally, Heodes alciphron is included in the IUCN Red List. Pieris ergane is also included in the "Listing of biotopes in Europe according to their significance for invertebrates".Saturnia pyri is protected by the IUCN Red List and the European Red List of Globally Threatened Animals and Plants and it is included in the "Listing of biotopes in Europe according to their significance for invertebrates".

VULNERABILITY
The greatest threats to the site and its preservation come from: a) increasing of human habitation and tourist development, b) unorganised leisure activities, c) the unreasonable use of fertilizers and pesticides in nearby cultivated areas (e.g. olive groves), d) the lack of information to the local inhabitants about the importance of the wetland. Although, for the time being, the verified reasons for decline of the natural environment of this site have had small to moderate influence on the animal taxa, it could be said that increasing human activities will soon disturb this sensitive ecosystem. The building and banking up activities, as well as uncontrolled tipping of rubbish are the main reasons for the alteration of some species habitats (especially those of amphibians, semi-aquatic reptiles, birds and some mammals). Also, water pollution caused by pesticides used in the nearby olive groves and by waste from an adjacent olive-press should not be neglected. As far as the otter is concerned, it mainly suffers from an alteration of its habitat (due to fires in reed beds, illegal hunting, pollution, etc.). The existing plans for future intensification of tourist and water-culture activities within and around the area of the site, form serious threats to this delicate
ecosystem.
